History of Dry Run Independent Baptist Church

Our History

In 1938, God called Brother Lew Shaw, Sr. to pastor a small flock of believers in a building then known as Dry Run Community Church.  Called out of a life of drunkenness and worldliness, Brother Lew had earlier accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.  He then began traveling with a gospel team, spreading the good news that Jesus saves sinners and sets them free.  In January 1939, the first service was held with seven people attending and a total offering of twenty-nine cents.

Over the years, the Lord blessed the ministry, and the growing flock soon outgrew their first building.  At first, they added to the existing building, but they soon outgrew that space as well.  In 1960, land was donated at the current church site and a new building was constructed and dedicated in 1962.  Pastor Shaw would continue pastoring the flock there until the Lord called him home in 1967.

That same year, Reverend Dan Hummel answered the call to pastor the church and the Lord continued to bless with a growing congregation and growing bus, junior church, and printing ministries.  In 1973, construction began on an auditorium to hold up to twelve hundred people.  In 1975, Pastor Hummel answered the call to evangelism and a new pastor was called.

In 1975 Bruce Weil began his pastorate and just a few years later, he and the church faced a fiery trial.  On March 19, 1978, the Dry Run facilities burned to the ground.  All but the new auditorium was totally destroyed. Unshaken in their faith and love of Christ, the church continued to meet in the auditorium while construction continued.  In 1978, the auditorium was completed, and Sunday School rooms were added the following year.

In January of 1985, Pastor John Leatherman accepted the call to lead and feed the flock.  In 2007, construction of an activity building commenced and in October of 2014, the first activity in the new building was held.

Praise God, we’ve come a long way since those first seven met down the hill.  Our prayer is that we continue to serve God and do His will here at Dry Run Independent Baptist Church and that many more souls will come to know that same God who saves souls and sets them free through the shed blood of his Son and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
